do i even know anything about horse polo
[It was a perk being a poly-science major and a friend of Jean Kirstein. While not exactly rich, he had access to parts that were–and the people within them. Accompanying him on one of his "home visits" was a surefire way to meet a number of lesser politicians, businessmen and the like.
Jean knew this. It was why he invited Armin with him, why he took him to his fencing lessons, country clubs, high fashion hangouts and where the were currently–the Junior Polo Field.
The game's just finished (Jean's team has won) and Jean disembarks his horse, handing the reins to one of his pals as he searches the crowd for Armin. It isn't until he unbuckles his helmet that he spots him, smoothing out his helmet hair and parting his way through the ground until he stands in front of his friend, all of his gear in hand.]
Hey. You meet anyone yet?

Hey. You meet anyone yet?

He smiles at the greeting, giving a glance back over his shoulder at some of the others who had been watching.]
I spoke to a couple of people. [A vague answer, but one he hopes will satisfy Jean enough to keep the mood up. Truth be told, he'd rather not rely on Jean's connections to get anywhere with his field. He understood that it was a large part of the world these days, but it was something he was striving to work against. He wanted to become known for who he was and what he could do and nothing else.
But it was touching that Jean seemed to think of him so much. He couldn't just shut that down. Not when he enjoyed the actual events themselves.]
You did really well, Jean!
i just want to use this icon go away
[Of course he was. Wasn't that the point of bringing him? Still, hearing him admit it was something else entirely. His cheeks heat up at the mere mention but by some small miracle he manages not to blush.]
I've been doing it for awhile.
[Explains while retreating to a nearby bench, biting off one of his gloves and sliding the other off with his fingers. Folds them together when they're both removed and leans forward.] So, who'd you talk to?
I am very okay with this also I'm gonna make shit up stop me if I do lame things
[The reply is immediate and a little confused. Why wouldn't he be? Still, he follows Jean over to the bench, watching him remove his gloves before turning to scan the crowds of people in the area. He could go on to press with his compliment, but Jean always seems to excuse himself from them like this, so Armin doesn't bother.
He has a question to answer in the end, anyway. It's a good thing he had ended up speaking to a few people here and there, though the conversations were not nearly as intriguing for him as they may have been for the others. He's not so foolish as to point, so he just nods his head in the general direction of a certain crowd talking over another member of Jean's team.]
Mark? In the brown sweater. [Some very important business man's rich son.] He said he knew you, and we spoke a bit about the game and my major.
[He pauses, pocketing his hands quietly as he rolls just slightly back on his heels, eyes drifting up to the sky.] He invited me to some sort of party, but... I don't really think it's the sort of thing I could show up to.
never stops u
[Unless there's some other reason. Jean doesn't really pay any mind to that, uncrossing his legs and leaning back on the bench.] It's not a big loss if you don't go. He's a jerk. You wouldn't miss anything.
[Although he could probably use it to socialize. Is that why he was bringing it up? As some sort of hint? Did that mean there was something he could do to ensure him a place? Mark was a weird guy–a general ass that someone always had a fondness for Jean. Maybe he could use that to his advantage.] ... I can probably get you in if you really want to go.

[Looking back down and over to Jean, Armin lands flat on his feet with a mildly surprised look. Jumping from saying he wouldn't miss anything to that--? It clicks into place slowly, and he has to raise his hands out of his pocket to wave it off.]
Oh, no, I just meant that it's not the sort of setting I'd fit into. There's too much fake talk and prying. [Says Armin while talking to a guy smack in the middle of this sort of lifestyle but whatever. It's true!!!]
no subject
Isn't that what politicians do?
[Shouldn't you get used to that? And did that mean he was uncomfortable here? Nervousness pricks at Jean's skin and he glances away, pretending to scan the rest of the crowd. Idly, his hands play with his riding crop, pressing it against the ground to bend it.]
That sort of thing gives you connections.
[As obnoxious as it was.]
no subject
Jean, do you think I'll need to have connections to get anywhere? [Now he looks back, curious. But whether or not that gets answered, he tacks on something else pretty quickly.] I think his invite was for the connection to you rather than anything else.

[Armin was smart enough to get his way no matter what–that was something Jean firmly believed. It was something he admired. It was why he had thought to bring him home. Armin had a long journey ahead of him. If Jean could do anything to minimize some part of it, he would. Armin deserved that much.
At the mention back to Mark, Jean scowls.]
I don't get why that guy's always on my case. I don't have any influence he needs.
no subject
But at the last part, he straightens a bit, watching Jean.]
Maybe he just likes you. [Is that really so hard to realize...]
no subject
Mark? The guy's had four girlfriends. There's no way he's gay.
[Nevermind interested in him.] Mark's a polo nut. He's been to ever game I've been in. The only reason he'd be interested in me is by roping me into his team.
[He pats his lower thighs before standing.] Anyway, if you want to go, let me know. I can show up with you to make sure you can get in.
no subject
I guess it wouldn't hurt to go. [Jean seems convinced it'll help. He's generally able to get along with most people anyway, so maybe it won't be too bad...] You don't have any other plans?
no subject
[But he's known Armin long enough to suspect something when the sleeves start to get played with.]
... We don't have to go.
